Black Bottom Digital Archive

Developed in 2017, our Black Bottom digital archive focuses on sharing the rich history of Black Bottom and Paradise Valley. It includes oral histories collected from community members and their descendants, as well as information about notable historical sites and figures. Additionally, the archive features our first version of a digital map that geolocates important historic sites. Sankofa Digital Map

As part of our Sankofa Community Research Project, we’ve created a digital map that allows us to compare the landscapes of late 1940s Black Bottom and Paradise Valley with today. This map is a tool to help us get a glimpse into the extent of the loss of these beloved communities. You can also view the Black Bottom Street View exhibit panoramas georeferenced onto the map, as well as locate past businesses and residents. Click here to view the first version and stay tuned for future opportunities to join in and help us grow this crucial community resource.

With Love and Flowers: A tribute to Black Detroit Matriarchs

In honor of Women’s History Month, Black Bottom Archives is partnering with Black Her Stories to archive the legacies of the Black women caregivers and changemakers past and present who have done so much to care for and protect our Black Detroit legacies. We are accepting submissions of photos and videos until April 17, 2025.
