Review | Jolly Pumpkin Pizzeria & Brewery

Gerrae Cotton | Bougie Foodie

While enjoying this beautiful weather we had here in Detroit this weekend, I stumbled upon a brand new bar to hit the midtown area - Jolly Pumpkin Pizzeria & Brewery.  As a Wolverine I am very familiar with the Ann Arbor brand and I’m very happy to see a location pop up in Detroit.  The Jolly Pumpkin has the Detroit industrial feel with hardwood and open pipes everywhere.  There is a large window that gives the renovated warehouse an airy feeling.  It faces a blank gray wall and I wish someone would tag it with some amazing graffiti like the Z parking lot, Eastern Market or the Dequindre Cut.  There are large benches as well as booths perfect for seating large parties.

Despite opening only about two weeks ago, the brewery attracted a nice size crowd.  Now as the third brewery on Canfield (Motor City Brewery and Traffic Jam and Snug being the other two), I think its safe to coin this area as the “Brewery Block”.  Since the brewery is fairly new and some beers are seasonal, there are a lot of interesting beers that are listed as coming soon.  The Jolly Pumpkin serves the perfect food pair to with their huge selection of beer -- pizza!  Unfortunately I wasn’t very hungry enough for a whole pizza so I ordered the Perfect Fried Chicken Sandwich.  That was a great decision because it was a tender fried chicken breast topped with sesame cilantro slaw, tumeric aioli, spicy pickles, and sriracha. Curry chips came on the side covered in curry powder so if you aren’t a fan of curry you might want to substitute for the truffle fries.  I will definitely come back here to check out the happy hour and the pizza!
